Identify coily hair
Before figuring out how to style coily hair, let’s make sure we can identify it. In the modern-day version of the curly hair typing system (introduced by celebrity stylist Andre Walker in the 1990s), there are nine curl types, from 2a to 4c, from loose to tight. Coily hair is known as Type 4 hair, with three subtypes.
4A hair type
The 4A curl pattern has small, tight S-shape coils that are usually finely textured and very tightly coiled.
4B hair type
The 4B coil type has a Z-shape curl pattern, with sharp angles. The curls are a little less defined than in the 4A type and there’s a little more density and coarseness.
4C hair type
4C coils are the coarsest of the Type 4 subtypes, appearing as a close zigzag pattern.
Style coily hair
When it comes to 4c coily hairstyles, the sky is the limit. Coily hair in all its textured glory can be versatile and fun, adapting to a whole range of hair styles. All you need is some inspiration and the right tools, and your coily hair can transform. There are long coily styles as well as short coily styles. From a classic natural afro, to looser waves, or even straight looks, having the right products and tools will make all the difference.
For natural coils
For natural afro looks or other tight, curly styles, make sure you are supercharging your coily hair with professional hydration. You’ll want to use shampoos, conditioners and styling products that are formulated specifically for your coils, like the Curl Expression range from L’Oréal Professionnel.
For straight and wavy looks
If you’re looking to loosen up your tight coils into a straight or wavy style, the AirLight Pro can help dry your hair at the speed of light without damage. And the SteamPod 4 is perfect for executing the loveliest waves on a head of coily hair.
Style your coily hair with confidence
Some people look at coily hair and see a challenge; we see an opportunity. Coily hair is so rich in texture and volume, there’s really nothing you can’t do to it. Whether you’re aiming for natural afro hair styles – long or short – or to loosen up those coils into waves or a straight style, make sure you’re armed with the right products and tools, and then you are ready to step into your coily hair style with confidence.
